  • Dons eyeing replacement for Eirik Hornlund
  • Ange’s appointment will be a major coup for Aberdeen

Aberdeen are currently Celtic’s managerial target and are plotting to take over a man who has recently made a big decision about his future.

Dons eyeing replacement for Eirik Hornlund

The Dons are thought to be close to appointing Eirik Hornlund as their new manager. However, when asked during his commentary duties for the Europa League match between SK Brann and Bologna if he was planning to go to Pittodrie Stadium, the Norwegian replied: “Yes. “For you? Today? Yes.

“No. I’m going to take a little, short break first, and then we’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Hornland has not been able to hit the ground running since leaving Ligue 2 side Saint-Etienne at the end of January, and has been out of work after losing more games than winning.

Pittodrie are not the only team in the Scottish Premiership looking for a new manager, with Celtic yet to formally appoint a replacement for caretaker manager Martin O’Neill, who is due to step down as Parkhead manager at the end of the season.

It was revealed in January that Ange Postecoglou was a key target for the Hoops, but the Australian has since made a big decision about his future and admitted in the latest issue of Overlap that he has no plans to return to Parkhead.

Ange said: “In terms of going back, I’m not going back, I just don’t think that’s my career.

“Whatever the next step is, it’s going to be something new, something I can influence, something I can win somewhere. But that doesn’t diminish the love I have for it.

A move to Aberdeen would certainly be a new challenge, with Sportboom reporting that the Scottish Premiership side are considering taking the former Tottenham Hotspur manager to Celtic if they are unable to finalize a deal with Hornland.

As the Dons look to appoint a successor to Jimmy Selin, the 60-year-old has now emerged as a surprise target in what could be considered a major coup.

Ange’s appointment will be a major coup for Aberdeen

The experienced manager was sacked by Nottingham Forest after just eight games earlier this season but could be a fantastic appointment for Aberbeen, having already proven he is capable of competing for silver in Scotland.

The Athens-born manager won five trophies during his time at Parkhead, including two Scottish Premiership titles, and has enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career, perhaps most notably winning the Europa League in 2025 while managing Tottenham Hotspur.

The Gers boss is confident.

Journalist Alex Martin believes Ange, who is dearly loved by Dermot Desmond, has done a “fantastic” job at Celtic, but will of course be more financially constrained at Aberdeen given the financial disparity between the two clubs.

It is therefore unlikely that the former Celtic manager would be keen on a move to Pittodrie, and the Dons may have to take a chance on Hornland instead, despite a disappointing result in France.
