  • Real Madrid plans to add defensive options
  • Liverpool face defensive concerns due to Konate and Van Dijk

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as one of Europe’s most popular defensive targets.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are preparing to compete with Liverpool for the German international, who is entering the final year of his contract with Dortmund.

Schlotterbeck’s acquisition could spark a high-profile transfer battle as both European giants evaluate their long-term defensive prospects.

Real Madrid plans to add defensive options

Real Madrid are believed to have listed Schlotterbeck as a priority option as they look to revamp their backline.

The Spanish giants boast a squad full of elite talent, but injuries and defensive instability have led to internal discussions about adding a commanding, ball-handling centre-back who can lead the line for years to come.

Schlotterbeck’s profile closely matches Madrid’s recruitment model: technically assured, tactically intelligent and experienced at both domestic and European level.

His performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League, particularly his composure under pressure and ability to initiate attacks from deep positions, drew widespread praise.

With his contract situation holding sway for potential suitors, Madrid could see this summer as an ideal opportunity to negotiate a deal before Dortmund risk losing him for a reduced fee next year.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are overcoming uncertainty in their own defensive department.

Ibrahima Konate is nearing the final months of his contract and although negotiations are underway, no final agreement has yet been reached.

Furthermore, Virgil van Dijk’s contract expires at the end of next season, raising questions about his succession plans at Anfield.

The Reds have already secured the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais as part of a defensive overhaul, but Schlotterbeck would be a more immediate and established addition.

His left-footed balance and experience at the highest level could provide stability during a transitional period.

Dortmund are reluctant to lose a key defensive player, but contractual realities may force them to do so.

‘Gentlemen’s agreement’ could help Liverpool and Manchester United secure summer transfer fee of £60m-65m
