The Premier League has found itself in an embarrassing predicament after deleting a social media post mocking Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The north London club lodged a formal complaint with league officials after their 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday morning, saying the content was unprofessional and malicious.

The controversy began on Sunday night when the Premier League’s official X and TikTok accounts, which have more than 70 million followers combined, shared a 13-second clip of Vicario.

Footage showed the Italian shot-stopper attempting a long free-kick, which harmlessly sent Fulham’s goal-kick wide.

The video was captioned: “How the play was put together…”, followed by the text “Interesting free kick from Vicario”, a laughing emoji and the word “oops”.

The post quickly went viral, racking up nearly 400,000 views on X alone before Tottenham officials intervened.

According to reports, Spurs leadership felt the tone of the post was “totally inappropriate” for the official governing body, especially at a time when the league has publicly championed player welfare and mental health.

Vicario linked with summer exit

This could be the goalkeeper’s last season at the club, with reports suggesting Tottenham are open to a sale this summer.

The player himself is keen to return to Italy, with several Serie A clubs showing interest.

Inter Milan are reportedly targeting the player. Rumors have surfaced that rivals Juventus are also interested in Vicario, and there are reports that they are already in talks with the player’s camp.

If Tottenham’s situation does not change, relegation could become a reality.

The social media blunder comes at a time of real crisis for the club.

The defeat against Fulham means Spurs have now equaled a record 10 consecutive games without a win in the Premier League, leaving them languishing in 16th place.

Tottenham are four points above the relegation zone with 10 games remaining.

The situation is so dire that there are reports that he will be obliged to take a 50% pay cut if the team loses to the Championship, a clause designed to protect the club’s financial stability.
