This suggests that Alonso is increasingly likely to replace Arne Slott at Anfield next season, according to a report in Bild.
The Spanish tactician was initially targeted by Liverpool manager Edwards after his impressive spell at Bayer Leverkusen, but he ended up joining Real Madrid.
However, according to Bild, Alonso is now available again and back on Liverpool’s agenda after a disappointing second season in Slott’s role.
Can Xabi Alonso turn things around for Liverpool?
Slott, who won the Premier League title in his first season leading LFC, should probably take a little longer, but we know the nature of the modern game means things can change quickly.
In reality, Liverpool are currently aiming to qualify for the Champions League and could end the season without a silver medal.
And although Slott performed extremely well in his first season in charge, there was a significant dip in performance despite giving the Dutch tactician a slew of expensive new signings to work with.
Alonso’s availability also tempts him to start thinking about other ways to work with this current team, especially with Florian Wirths.
Xabi Alonso could unlock Florian Wirtz again
Alonso and Wirtz worked well together at Leverkusen, but that is one of the big challenges for Slott this season.
Liverpool have invested heavily in the German international, but he does not value the slot system and it will be vital to get the most out of such an expensive contract.
Alonso could once again work his magic with Wirtz and fellow former Leverkusen player Jeremy Frimpong.
