Chelsea have officially avoided a Premier League point deduction despite announcing a staggering £262.4 million pre-tax loss for the 2024-25 financial year, the biggest annual loss in English football history.
While rival teams such as Everton and Nottingham Forest have faced sporting sanctions for minor breaches in recent years, the Blues have overcome the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) through a combination of strategic accounting and unprecedented cooperation with regulators.

Chelsea announce record budget deficit
The club’s latest financial results, published on 1 April 2026, revealed a significant change from the previous year’s profits of £128.4m.
This record deficit exceeds Manchester City’s previous record of £197.5 million set in 2011.
Club officials blamed the slump on a sharp rise in operating costs and an estimated £390 million in staff costs, the sixth highest in Europe.
Despite generating the second-highest revenue in the club’s history (£490.9m), the heavy investment in the squad, raised at a cost of over £1.5bn, has put enormous pressure on the balance sheet.
Chelsea lose points after smart move
As explained by the Guardian, despite the eye-popping headline figures, Chelsea remain compliant with the PSR for the duration of the three-year monitoring period until 2025.
The club managed to avoid point deductions, as Premier League regulations require points to be deducted for losses caused by infrastructure, academies, women’s teams and community projects.
By making the most of these ‘ad-backs’, Chelsea have reduced their ‘adjusted’ losses to below the three-year cap of £105m.
