Michael McDowell Battled SVG Intensity Before Race Throttle Glitch Cut Short

Shane van Gisbergen dominated once again on Sunday, but his toughest rival couldn’t quite challenge him at the end due to mechanical troubles. Michael McDowell started alongside van Gisbergen on the front row at the Chicago Street Course, quickly taking the lead from him in the opening lap and winning Stage 1, signaling a strong chance at victory. The Spire Motorsports driver, who has been searching for a win to break a two-year drought, seemed poised for a big result.

However, after leading on lap 31, McDowell’s throttle got stuck, forcing him to relinquish the lead and head to the garage for repairs. He rejoined the race after 20 laps but ultimately finished a disappointing 32nd. Meanwhile, van Gisbergen went on to claim the checkered flag.

McDowell later explained, “The throttle cable just broke. I’m not sure how it happened, but that’s the issue. I felt in control of the race and believed we had a real fight. We focused on strategy, aiming for a one-stop and carefully managing our tires. When I was behind the pace car, the throttle was stuck open, but luckily I hit the switch before an accident. We’ll aim for next weekend.”

Fortunately for McDowell, NASCAR moves to another road course at Sonoma next week, where he finished second just a year ago, giving him a promising opportunity to bounce back.

Fan Take: This race highlights how mechanical reliability can make or break a driver’s chance at glory, reminding NASCAR fans of the unpredictable nature of the sport. McDowell’s misfortune and van Gisbergen’s win underscore the thrill and heartbreak inherent in racing, promising more intense competition as the season moves forward.
