Chelsea are interested in signing Werder Bremen defender Karim Koulibaly at the end of this season.

According to Florian Plettenberg, the 18-year-old central defender is also being targeted by clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester United and Newcastle United. The German club is willing to pay a transfer fee of around 40 million to 50 million euros for his signature. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea are prepared to go bankrupt for him.

The defender is considered a “top talent with huge potential”. He could be a great long-term signing if Chelsea can get a deal done. They need to improve defensively and players like Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile will need to be replaced in the summer. They have the financial power to pay up to €50 million for a young defender and may be able to justify that investment in the future.

Manchester United, on the other hand, need a stronger squad, especially if they qualify for the Champions League next campaign. Although Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with the club, they still need a long-term replacement to replace him. The 18-year-old could be the ideal player for them. Manchester United also have the financial power to sign the player.

Koulibaly wants to compete at the highest level and the opportunity to join Chelsea or Manchester United would be exciting for him. They have a good track record in developing young players and they could help him reach his potential.

It will be interesting to see which of the two clubs decides to take over the interest and make a formal offer at the end of the season.
