Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are interested in signing River Plate’s Ian Subiabre.

According to journalist Hernán Castillo, two Premier League clubs are continuing to make inquiries about signing the 19-year-old wide player, and it remains to be seen whether a deal can be concluded before the summer.

“River will be a strong market in the middle of this year. They will spend, but they will also bring in money because it is very difficult to maintain Subiabre. Very difficult. He already has a huge amount of interest. They will spend, because it is very difficult to maintain Subiabre.

“I know that Tottenham, Chelsea, Villarreal and Lazio are constantly asking, and Tottenham are very strong right now.

“I know that for Subiabre, in addition to his agent, there was already an offer of 8 million euros (about 690 million yen) that River rejected, and Tottenham are thinking of 12 million euros or 14 million euros (10.4 million pounds to 12.2 million pounds).”

If Tottenham can sign him for a transfer fee of around 14 million euros, it would be a huge deal for them. The 19-year-old is a great talent with a bright future and could easily justify the investment. Tottenham need more quality on the flanks and Subiabre will add unpredictability and technical ability to the final third. He made 35 appearances for River Plate, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

Similarly, Chelsea need players of his quality. Subiabre could compete with the likes of Alejandro, Garnacho and Jamie Gittens next season.

The opportunity to move to England would be an exciting one for the South American attacker. It will be a big step up in his career and he will test himself at a high level. Playing regular football in England could help him develop further.

Chelsea and Tottenham have the financial wherewithal to sign him over the line, but it remains to be seen which club will be able to convince him to sign the player. He should aim to join a club with a clear path to the first team and a clear role in the wing. He needs to play regularly to continue to develop. Sitting on the bench at a big club will have a negative impact on his development.
