Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS analyst Tony Romo will have to try another year to reach the U.S. Open after shooting a 9-over 79 and losing by 11 strokes in the regional qualifying round in Waco, Texas, on Monday.

Romo is one of eight former athletes who have qualified for the first round of the U.S. Open, which will be held June 15-18 at Sinek Hills.

Romo, a former American Century Championship winner, shot 40-39 in a low-scoring qualifier at Ridgewood Country Club, with Theo Humphrey the medalist with a 66 and needing 2 under to advance to the final U.S. Open qualifying stage, the last time Romo reached it in 2010.

Among the baseball players aiming to advance to next week’s regional qualifying round are two-time All-Star relief pitcher Tyler Clippard, pitcher Shigetoshi Hasegawa and outfielder Aaron Hicks. The list also includes tennis player Mardy Fish, former NFL running back Danny Woodhead and quarterback Drew Olson, and hockey player JT Miller.

Hicks is married to former LPGA Tour pro Cheyenne Woods. Cheyenne Woods has six top 25 finishes on the LPGA Tour and has played in the U.S. Women’s Open five times. She is Tiger Woods’ niece.

The 18-hole local qualifier will be held at various courses next week, but Hicks will be held May 11 at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
