TOKYO — Former world No. 4 and 2014 U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori said on social media Thursday that he plans to retire after this season.

Nishikori, 36, has been affected by injuries in recent years, missing the Australian Open in January due to right shoulder pain. He also missed last year’s U.S. Open.

Nishikori, who made his professional debut in 2007, became the first Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles final at the 2014 US Open, but lost in straight sets to Marin Cilic of Croatia.

Nishikori, who won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by defeating Rafael Nadal in three sets, said in early April about his health that he was “barely holding on.”

Nishikori said in “X”, “Looking back on everything I’ve done so far, I can proudly say that I did my best. I’m really happy to be able to walk on this path.”
