The US Open punished Danil Medvedev $42,500 on Wednesday after a meltdown and a racket smash during the opening round defeat in New York on Sunday.

Medvedev was fined $30,000 for sportsman-like behavior when he was defeated by Benjamin Bonzi, and hit another $12,500 for racket abuse after utterly destroying the racket after the loss.

Medvedev earned $110,000 for participating in the opening round of the tournament. The fine would take him more than a third of that.

Boni was scheduled to attend the match on Sunday night when the photographer actually went on the court and completely confused the match. It led to a break of nearly seven minutes, during which Medvedev approached the officials and began screaming at him. Officials gave Bonzi another serve due to the error.

“He wants to go home, he doesn’t want to be here,” Medvedev screamed to ESPN cameras, talking about the officials during his explosion. “He’s paid by the match, not an hour.”

Medvedev eventually got together and forced five sets, but Bonzi won and made it from the first round. In the opening round of the majors this season, he marked Bonsie’s second victory over Medvedev. He defeated Medvedev at Wimbledon in June. Medvedev has only won one match this season in all four Grand Slams.
