Aston Villa currently lead the race to sign AS Roma star Matthias Soule, ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
Unai Emery is a big fan of the Argentine, which is not surprising given that he has been one of Roma’s most important players in Serie A this season, regularly scoring goals and creating chances for his teammates.
Matthias Soule’s Serie A season
Playing time 2,082 minutes
6 goals
5 assists
42 opportunities were created
21 successful crosses
33 successful dribbles
Won 99 battles in duels.
The 23-year-old can play in attacking midfield or on the right wing and could be the ideal replacement for Morgan Rodgers, who continues to attract interest from Manchester United.
Rodgers has found the back of the net just once in his last 11 Premier League games, but remains Villa’s top scorer in the Premier League this season, so losing the England international could be a huge blow.

2 | ollie watkins | 14 |
3 | John McGinn | 8 |
4 | Emiliano Buendia | 8 |

Aston Villa, Matthias Soule leads the race
With Rodgers’ future in doubt, Aston Villa are currently in pole position in the race to sign Sull from AS Roma, who is valued at around €40m ($35m), although the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, AFC Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion could be in contention.
The South American received great praise from scout Ben Mattinson, who said: “Sule is generally a really interesting player to watch. He plays with flair and confidence, which is very attractive. There is a sense of inevitability with the Argentine. He is always trying to make something happen and when he has the ball in a certain area, he will do it.”
However, with rival interest from some of the Premier League’s top clubs, qualifying for next season’s Champions League could be essential for Villa to win the race for Roma’s star, and they are still not quite beyond that target.
Aston Villa set for an exciting season finale
Fifth-placed Villa are four points behind nearest rivals AFC Bournemouth with two Premier League games left, and Emery’s side should be able to get the job done, as the Cherries are scheduled to face Manchester City in their next game.
Their recent form has been poor, with a 1-0 loss against Fulham, a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, and a 2-2 draw against relegated Burnley.
However, the Europa League appears to be at the forefront of the Villans’ minds, as they advance to the final on May 20th in Istanbul to face SC Freiburg.
