Crystal Palace are reportedly eyeing Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis as they look to strengthen their backline following Marc Guehi’s move to Manchester City.
According to TEAMtalk, Palace are one of several clubs keeping an eye on the 24-year-old centre-back, who could aim to return to the Premier League this summer.
Southampton are thought to value him at more than £20m, but their failure to gain promotion has opened the door for interested clubs to test their resolve.
This is exactly the kind of deal Crystal Palace should consider.
Losing Gehi is always going to create a gap, not just because of his defense, but because of his composure, leadership and ability to play from the back.
Marc Guehy left Crystal Palace earlier this year
Manchester City completed a £20 million move for Gehi in January 2026, with Chelsea also receiving a percentage of the sale price from the deal.
Harwood-Bellis isn’t the same player as Gehi, but he fits into a similar mindset.
He is young, English, used to being on the ball and already has a lot of experience for his age.
He came from Manchester City’s youth ranks and had spells on loan at clubs including Blackburn, Anderlecht, Stoke and Burnley, helping them win promotion in 2024 before joining Southampton on a permanent basis.
What makes this story interesting is the timing. Southampton still consider Harwood-Bellis an important player and reportedly do not want to lose him so easily.
His contract runs through 2028, so he won’t be forced to sell anytime soon. However, after the disappointment in the playoffs, the atmosphere surrounding the club seems to have changed.
TEAMtalk reported that he is one of the players dissatisfied with the current situation and that the possibility of him leaving is increasing.
Eagles face competition from other clubs
Palace aren’t the only team in the race. West Ham, Everton and Burnley have also been linked with the defender.
That competition could make things difficult for Palace, especially if bid prices start to exceed Southampton’s current valuation.
Still, there is a clear logic behind Palace’s interest. They need a defender who can grow with the team, not a short-term fix.
Harwood-Bellis has the profile of a player who can step into the Premier League and improve with regular appearances.
He is strong, calm and used to playing in a team that wants to build from the back.
