  • Andoni Iraola could make Fernandes his first contract
  • Liverpool will face Manchester United

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes ahead of a potential summer transfer, and the timing makes this story all the more interesting.

According to TEAMtalk, the 21-year-old is on the radar of Liverpool after West Ham were relegated to the Championship.

Manchester United are also interested after agreeing a £35m deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta.

However, from Liverpool’s point of view, Fernandes could be a symbolic signing, especially with Andoni Iraola close to becoming the club’s next manager.

Iraola is widely expected to take charge at Anfield following Arne Slott’s departure, and Liverpool will be keen to move quickly in the transfer market if a deal is struck early.

Andoni Iraola could make Fernandes his first contract

Fernandes could be his first signing at the club, which would give the new manager a young, energetic midfielder to help shape his system right away.

This makes sense, as Iraola likes players who can run, press, play quickly and react in transition. Fernandes fits that profile.

He is technically sharp, mobile and comfortable carrying the ball into the midfield.

At just 21 years old, he has plenty of room to develop and fits Liverpool’s need to refresh their squad without simply signing an older temporary player.

But West Ham won’t make it easy. They are reportedly still seeking around £80m for Fernandes following his relegation.

Liverpool will face Manchester United

This is a huge number, especially for a player who is still developing. However, the Hammers are expected to consider making an offer as they need to raise funds after losing the Championship.

Manchester United’s interest adds another layer. Manager Michael Carrick has already signed Ederson, but United still want to further improve their midfield.

Fernandes would give them a younger, more creative option. That means Liverpool may need to move quickly if Iraola really wants him.

Fernandes would be a very interesting player for Liverpool to sign Iraola first. He won’t emerge as a complete superstar, but he has the energy and technical ability to develop into a major player.

The only issue is the price. £80 million feels too high, especially when Liverpool need to strengthen in other areas as well.
