Panthers Face Offense Woes: Stalled in Their Zone and Power Play Challenges Persist

The Florida Panthers are hitting the road once again. On Monday night in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Florida had a chance to eliminate the Carolina Hurricanes but fell short. The Hurricanes played their best game of the series, shutting out the high-powered Panthers 3-0, with a few empty-net goals sealing the win. This marks a positive step forward for Carolina as they strive to stay alive in the series.

Previously, when Florida took a 3-0 series lead, they ended up playing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final a few weeks later. How much they’ve learned from that experience will become clear in the coming days.

Looking at Game 4:

The Panthers aimed for perfection but struggled. Many of Florida’s offensive attempts featured difficult cross-zone passes that failed to connect, leading to little production. Carolina excelled at blocking shots—15 in total—and disrupting passing lanes. The Panthers’ attempts sometimes felt forced and disrupted their normally fluid style of play. Head coach Paul Maurice noted, “We were either looking for something or something better. When you do that, you always play slow games.”

Though the Panthers lost, there are valuable lessons to be taken. Maurice, known for his belief that teams learn more from losses than wins, sees opportunity here. The game belonged to the Hurricanes, who dictated the pace and style, exposing the Panthers’ shortcomings compared to other series. Maurice praised Carolina’s performance and viewed the game as a learning experience.

Florida’s power play, which was effective early in the series (5 for 4 chances), faltered. Carolina, known for having the league’s best penalty kill in the regular season and playoffs, reasserted their dominance. Over the two games in Florida, the Panthers managed only 7 shots on goal during power plays and scored no goals. Maurice admitted the power play struggles have been partly due to the loss of key player Sam Reinhart, but believes the team can still find ways to score.

This series continues to be an intense battle, with Carolina fighting hard to stay in it and Florida looking to close things out.

Fan Take: This series is a thrilling showcase of high-stakes playoff hockey, highlighting how even dominant teams can face tough challenges. Hockey fans should pay attention because the lessons learned here could shape not only the outcome of this series but also how these teams perform in future Stanley Cup runs.
