Viktor Hovland defeats Scottie Scheffler in 2026 Travelers Championship Playoffs

One of the most talented players on the PGA Tour is back in his place in the winner’s circle. Viktor Hovland defeated world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a one-hole playoff at the 2026 Travelers Championship, converting his 54-hole lead into his eighth career victory at the circuit.

“It’s been stressful, but it’s been incredible,” Hovland said. “Especially after Scotty made that shot there. I knew I had to be at my best to have a chance to beat him and he definitely brought that out of me and I couldn’t be happier.”

In fact, Hovland defeated Scheffler on the first hole of the playoff at TPC River Highlands on Monday morning, and both returned to the venue after finishing the tournament at a legal 21 under par on Sunday night. The flight was delayed by more than 80 minutes due to weather on Sunday afternoon and had to return after dark on Monday.

Hovland made birdie on his first shot on the par-4 18th from just within 7 feet, but Scheffler missed from within 3 feet.

“I hit it on my line, I think it was just a little harder. That was one of those putts I had to make, and I just hit it a little harder,” Scheffler said. “So I’m a little disappointed, especially with the putt I made last night to stay in the tournament. But overall, there’s definitely going to be some good things to come out of this week. I hit the ball really well and came very close, but it’s just one of those weeks where it wasn’t quite enough.”

Hovland’s eighth career win comes 15 months after his victory in his 146th PGA Tour appearance. The Norwegian’s playoff record improved to 2-0 and he now has five of six wins, converting at least a share of the lead into a win after 54 holes. His only problem came at the 2022 British Open Championship in St. Andrews.

Scheffler, on the other hand, hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since winning his first tournament of the year, the American Express. Since late January, he has four runner-up finishes (two of which he lost in the playoffs) and eight top-five finishes, including a T4 at the U.S. Open last week.

Hovland is the first Norwegian to win the Travelers Championship and the first international since Russell Knox in 2016 to reign supreme in Cromwell, Conn., ending the longest streak of tournaments without an international winner on the PGA Tour. He is also the second Norwegian to win on the PGA Tour this season, following compatriot Christopher Reitan.

Despite the constant tinkering and desire to jump down the rabbit hole, Hovland continues to look for a way to get into the winner’s circle. He has won in six of his seven seasons on the PGA Tour, and 2024 is the only year in which he did not hoist a trophy.

With the win, Hovland moved up 36 spots in the FedExCup standings and 20th in the season-long race, earning him the inside track to qualify for the Tour Championship, where he participates every season as a full-time PGA Tour member.

“I know how good I can be, and I keep pushing myself and wanting to get better, and when I don’t get there, I get really upset,” Hovland said. “…I didn’t get off to a great start on Thursday, but it didn’t really bother me. Obviously, it helps when you have people like this cheering you on. So, yeah, it was a lot of fun.”

Although it was not his 21st PGA Tour win, Scheffler’s loss in the playoffs marked his 35th consecutive top-25 finish, second most in the last 40 years behind Tiger Woods (38 wins). He also has 16 top-10 finishes in signature events since 2024, the most of any player on the PGA Tour.

“We played solid all four days,” Scheffler said. “Obviously there are some shots I want back, but overall it was a good, solid week. Obviously I was a little disappointed with the finish, but overall I feel like my game is in a good place.”
