Manager Fabrizio Romano has drawn up plans for Manchester United’s midfield after the Red Devils lost Matheus Fernandes to Tottenham.

Despite the setback of missing out on the 21-year-old Portuguese talent, Old Trafford leaders remain determined to carry out a radical rebuild of the engine room under manager Michael Carrick.

Fabrizio Romano updates Man United midfield plans

Fabrizio Romano took to YouTube to provide an important update on how the club plans to change direction.

Although United missed the mark by simply not being able to match Tottenham’s £85m package, Romano insisted the club’s wider strategy remains intact.

“It’s important to be clear: Manchester United will continue to sign midfielders,” Romano said.

“United were going to sign two players, one being Ederson, but they would still sign at least one more.”

Atalanta’s arrival of Brazilian international Ederson is expected to be finalized, with the club actively searching for a high-profile second addition.

Why Manchester United are struggling to sign Aurélien Choamenyi

Romano also addressed rumors of a link between United and Real Madrid star Aurélien Tchoameny.

Choameni is seen internally as an absolute “dream contract”, but the economic reality of the current deal is considered too steep.

The obstacle lies not only in Real Madrid’s high valuation, but also in the players’ high wage demands.

Romano said the only way a deal could happen is if Choameni agreed to a completely restructured salary framework, which is not currently on the table.

“A lot of people are asking about[Cioameni]. He is a dream signing for Man United, they love the player, but at the moment the financial terms of the deal are considered too high, not only in terms of transfer fee to Real Madrid but also in terms of salary.”

“So the only way to open the way after missing out on Fernandes is to talk about a completely different salary structure, which is not happening at the moment.

“For now, Manchester United will reassess the situation and find their next midfield target, but it remains a position they would like to strengthen.”

Who should Manchester United target after missing out on Fernandes?

With the door closed on Choameni for the time being and Fernandes departing for north London, United are back to square one to reassess the market.

Recent inflation in the market, particularly domestic trade, has forced a change of tactics at Old Trafford.

United are keeping a close eye on the pool of dynamic replacements to complement Ederson.

The club are keeping a close eye on Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with Lille teenage sensation Ayyoub Bouadi and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott also emerging as high-profile targets.

United’s recruitment team are focused on finding the right talent to protect the transition zone and breathe new life into the midfield, rather than blindly paying big fees.
