  • Is Sandro Tonali worth a move for Tottenham?
  • Who else could Arsenal sign in midfield?

Tottenham new signing Sandro Tonali is reportedly more keen on a move to Arsenal this summer, according to sources at Newcastle United.

The Italian midfielder’s move from Newcastle to Spurs was officially announced earlier today and should be a fantastic signing for the north Londoner.

However, despite Tonali claiming in his first message to Tottenham fans that it was his only option, this does not seem to be entirely accurate.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle sources claim that Tonali was leaning toward Arsenal, but the Gunners ultimately backed out of the deal due to the high price tag.

Is Sandro Tonali worth a move for Tottenham?

Tonali was undoubtedly a top performer at Newcastle, but while his six-year contract with Spurs was worth £280,000-a-week, the Mail claim his final transfer fee was £100m.

It is perhaps easy to see why the 26-year-old was not seen as being worth it for Arsenal, who already have Declan Rice, Martin Zvimendi and Miles Lewis-Skelly in their midfield.

Christian Norgaard barely played for Mikel Arteta’s side last season, so there’s probably room for a bit more depth, but it’s hard to imagine a player as expensive as Tonali starting regularly.

Who else could Arsenal sign in midfield?

However, Arsenal definitely need to get their act together and several other top players are also likely to be on the lookout.

The Mail’s report links them with Bruno Guimarães and Alex Scott, two others who won’t come cheap.

Time will tell whether they regret not doing what their rivals did and not paying Tonali a price.
