After suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals, England will choose stability rather than having to reset their manager again.

Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead and they were minutes away from reaching their first final since 1966, but goals from Enzo Fernandes and Lautaro Martinez in the final minute pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback in Atlanta.

As a result, England’s tactical approach has come under intense scrutiny.

After taking the lead, the team fell further back and struggled to retain possession, with Thomas Tuchel’s defensive substitutions being blamed for leading to Argentina’s sustained pressure.

Despite disappointment and public criticism, the Football Association does not appear ready to make changes before the next major tournament.

FA ready to support Tuchel after Soccer World Cup disappointment

According to the Mirror, Tuchel retains the backing of FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and is expected to remain in charge of England’s Euro 2028 campaign.

The German is understood to have the support of the board despite questions over how his side managed the final stages against the reigning world champions.

Manager Tuchel has also made it clear that he intends to continue playing. Sky Sports report that the player remains committed to leading England to Euro 2028, sticking to the decision he made when they lost in the semi-finals.

Euro 2028 offers an opportunity to complete the project

The FA had already shown this belief before the World Cup. English Football confirmed in February that Tuchel had signed a contract extension until Euro 2028, to be held in Britain and Ireland.

It was a wise decision to let Tuchel stay. England have reached the World Cup semi-finals, but it would feel reactionary to sack the manager after one painful tactical failure.

But he must learn from Argentina’s collapse. England became passive after scoring, allowing their experienced opponents complete control of the match.

Euro 2028 will define Tuchel’s reign in England. Stability is valuable, but he must prove that this talented generation can be more courageous when the pressure is at its peak.
