Stonestreet Farm has introduced another impressive group of yearlings for the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, featuring in Book 1 a standout colt, Hip 245, sired by North America’s leading stallion Not This Time. This colt hails from the first Keeneland September consignment by Heartwood Farm and comes from a family with a strong track record of producing successful stallions.
What catches attention immediately is the colt’s sire, Not This Time, who currently tops the North American sire list and is on track to end Into Mischief’s seven-year domination. Not This Time has already sired two Eclipse Award winners, Epicenter and Up to the Mark, both of whom have begun their stud careers at prominent Kentucky farms. Along with other notable sons such as Cogburn, Goal Oriented, and the soon-to-retire Grade 1 winner Magnitude, Not This Time’s progeny are shaping a vibrant presence in Kentucky’s breeding sphere, and Hip 245’s strong pedigree fits seamlessly into this elite group.
Owners of Not This Time’s offspring can expect an exciting racing career, as the stallion himself, a son of Giant’s Causeway, has produced 14 Grade 1 winners and 40 graded or group stakes winners in total. Ten percent of his foals of racing age have become stakes winners—a percentage that matches the legendary Into Mischief and surpasses other notable sires with six-figure stud fees, such as Constitution, Curlin, and Justify.
Not This Time showed early brilliance on the track, debuting with a 10-length victory as a two-year-old, winning the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes by nearly nine lengths, and narrowly finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Hip 245 is the second offspring of Malibu Moon mare Hanalei Moon, a Stonestreet homebred who claimed the One Dreamer Stakes at Kentucky Downs and placed in several other stakes races. Stonestreet originally acquired the family line through Hanalei Moon’s dam, Authenticity, a Grade 2 winner who also placed in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and was purchased by the farm for $1.2 million as a broodmare prospect. Authenticity also produced Charlatan, a standout Stonestreet Bred & Raised graduate with multiple Grade 1 victories who has become an influential young sire in Kentucky, ranking second among third-crop sires for stakes and graded stakes winners.
Although Hanalei Moon is still early in her broodmare career, the female line boasts a strong record of producing graded stakes winners, with Hip 245’s second through fifth dams each contributing graded black-type performers, emphasizing the family’s potency.
Another notable aspect of Hip 245’s pedigree is the influence of broodmare sire Malibu Moon. His daughters have produced Eclipse Award winners Stellar Wind and Sierra Leone, along with Sovereign Award winner Bold Script. Malibu Moon’s broodmare sire credentials also include Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner and several Grade 1 winners like Bellafina, Girvin, and Midnight Bourbon.
As a son of Giant’s Causeway, Not This Time complements Malibu Moon mares exceptionally well, a “nick” that has produced Grade 1 winner Kalypso, who sold for $2.1 million at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. This sire line and broodmare combination boasts a 73% racetrack participation rate and a 62% winners percentage, both figures stronger or comparable to other breedings.
Heartwood Farm, representing Stonestreet Bred & Raised, offers Hip 245 from Barn 18 in the Keeneland September sale, with the colt set to be auctioned during the second session of Book 1 on Tuesday.
