AJ Styles believes that Omos should be reviewing classic Rey Mysterio matches ahead of their upcoming encounter at TripleMania 34, since Mysterio has built his career overcoming much larger opponents. Styles brought up the matchup voluntarily during a recent episode of The AJ Styles Show.
“Rey Mysterio, a Hall of Famer and one of the most iconic wrestlers globally, will be facing one of the biggest wrestlers in the world,” Styles remarked. “He’s smaller—not a mini wrestler, but definitely one of the smaller competitors in professional wrestling. That’s incredible.”
Styles sees the size difference as a reason to be hopeful rather than concerned.
“The amazing thing is, I’m expecting something great because Rey has faced challenges like this his whole career,” Styles said. “So, Omos should be watching old clips of Rey Mysterio to learn what he’s capable of.”
Styles even called Mysterio the “GOAT of lucha libre.”
The showdown happened on the first night of TripleMania 34 on Friday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada, with Omos emerging victorious in the main event.
Mysterio’s lucha libre roots have long involved facing much larger opponents, a strategy he maintained across his stints in WCW, WWE, and AAA. The matches Styles recommends studying span from the late 1990s to today. Standing at 7 feet 3 inches, Omos represents perhaps the biggest challenge Mysterio has faced in nearly three decades.
Mysterio also serves as AAA’s General Manager. After an incident on the August 22 episode of Lucha Libre AAA on Fox, where Omos attacked Galeno post-match and then chokeslammed Mysterio when he intervened, Mysterio suspended Omos indefinitely. Omos showed up at the August 30 Ola de Calor event in Edinburg, Texas, ticket in hand, leading to a confrontation that set up this match.
The storyline takes an interesting twist on night two, September 13, when Dominik defends the AAA Mega Championship against El Grande Americano at Arena CDMX in Mexico City.
Notably, WWE currently owns AAA, and this is only the second TripleMania event under that ownership. It’s also the first time TripleMania has taken place in the United States since 1996. Originally planned for the Luxor, the venue was changed to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in July.
