The Yankees have placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list as of Wednesday due to a sprained right thumb. Chisholm, who was enjoying his best performance this season, will be sidelined for approximately seven to ten days, with the team having 18 games remaining this season.
Manager Aaron Boone shared before the Yankees’ game against the Rockies, “We just got an update that he does have a sprained right thumb that’s going to require an IL stint. So no baseball activities for the next seven to ten days, and then we’ll reassess.”
The injury occurred during a slide at second base while stretching a single in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s 5-3 victory. Chisholm was tagged out by Colorado’s Ezequiel Tovar, with his thumb apparently coming into contact with Tovar’s cleat. Although Chisholm stayed in to play the ninth inning, he was removed after a poor throw while fielding a ground ball.
Chisholm, who will become a free agent after this season, is currently hitting .232 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs across 134 games. He has also stolen 40 bases in 49 attempts, making him the first Yankee to reach 40 steals since Brett Gardner in 2011. Recently, Chisholm has been hot at the plate, batting .391 with two homers and six RBIs over his last 15 games.
Boone acknowledged Chisholm’s recent strong performance, saying, “I feel like he has been really putting together some of his best at-bats of the season for an extended stretch. So definitely a blow, but hopefully the time off gets this right and positions us well moving forward.”
Chisholm is the fourth Yankees player to be placed on the injured list since August 23, joining pitchers Ryan Weathers, Fernando Cruz, and Trent Grisham. He is also the 18th Yankee to hit the IL this season, as the team recently welcomed back Aaron Judge from an 84-game absence due to a broken rib.
Since joining the Yankees from the Marlins in July 2024, Chisholm has had multiple stints on the injured list, including a strained right oblique last season and a sprained left elbow earlier this season. On Wednesday, Jose Caballero filled in at second base.
Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe, who has played 19 games at second base for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, recently earned International League Player of the Week honors after batting .524 with three homers and six RBIs in six games. Volpe was not in the lineup Wednesday but has been impressive since being sent down on August 4, hitting .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs over 27 games. Boone is optimistic about Volpe’s progress, adding, “I feel like he’s in a really good spot. He’s been really productive and playing well, adapting to different positions. So we’ll see.”
