Kyle Busch has been removed from the NASCAR Cup Series points leaderboard.
Busch passed away on Thursday at the age of 41 due to sepsis after battling bacterial pneumonia. His death certificate states that he had been suffering from pneumonia for several days to weeks before sepsis set in, leading to blood clots.
According to Fox Sports, NASCAR decided to remove Busch from the official points standings after discussing with his Richard Childress Racing team, aiming to be respectful and considerate of those who would be affected by seeing his name on the leaderboard.
As a result, Busch’s name has been taken off the standings listed on NASCAR’s website. Prior to the Coca-Cola 600 race on Sunday, he was ranked 23rd with 217 points accumulated over the first 12 races this season. He had recently achieved a couple of top-10 finishes, placing 10th at Talladega and 8th at Watkins Glen.
Busch holds the record for the most wins across NASCAR’s three national series, with a total of 234 victories. His latest victory occurred on May 15 in the Truck Series at Dover. He is the all-time leader in wins for both the O’Reilly Series and the Truck Series and is ninth on the Cup Series all-time wins list with 63 victories.
His last wins came in 2023 when he captured three races during his first year with Richard Childress Racing. However, as RCR faced challenges competing, Busch’s success in the Cup Series slowed, managing only eight top-five finishes in his last 84 Cup events, compared to 246 top fives in his initial 678 races.
