Newcastle were handed their first painful reality check under Matthias Jaissle as Leeds United swept them aside at Elland Road.
The Magpies travelled to Yorkshire unbeaten in the Premier League, but that run ended with a heavy 4-1 defeat on Monday night.
Leeds played with greater speed, strength and aggression from the opening whistle, and Newcastle struggled to escape the home side’s pressure while rarely managing to establish any control in midfield.
An early injury to Nico Gonzalez made their task even harder.
Teenager Sean Steur was introduced alongside Lewis Miley, leaving Jaissle with an extremely young pairing against one of the league’s most energetic teams.
The damage arrived quickly, with an Ao Tanaka effort striking two Newcastle players before Lewis Miley was credited with an own goal after 32 minutes.

Jayden Bogle doubled the lead moments later, getting the final touch on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header.
Calvert-Lewin then forced his way into the penalty area and calmly scored Leeds’ third before half-time.
Newcastle needed a major response after the break, but instead, Noah Okafor produced a brilliant finish to make it four and remove any remaining doubt about the result.
Bazoumana Touré pulled one back for Newcastle in the final minute, but it was little more than consolation on a miserable evening.
Harvey Barnes had earlier been denied by James Trafford, while Matias Fernandez-Pardo endured a difficult first start, and the absence of the injured Anthony Elanga also left Newcastle without one of their main threats on the counterattack.
Jaissle admitted afterwards that his players had been unable to match Leeds physically, and the manner of the loss will have been especially concerning.
Newcastle lost several established midfielders during a dramatic summer rebuild, and their lack of experience became clear once Gonzalez was forced off.
Newcastle consider triggering Luka Sucic’s £51m release clause after Leeds collapse
A fresh Spanish report suggests Jaissle could eventually turn to somebody he already knows well.
According to AS, Newcastle are plotting to trigger Luka Sucic’s £51 million release clause at Real Sociedad.
No offer has been made, but paying the clause in full would remove Sociedad’s power to reject a transfer, providing Sucic wanted the move.
The 24-year-old, who ex-Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic called ‘very powerful’, joined the Spanish club from RB Salzburg in 2024 and is contracted until 2029.
Sucic has also already scored two league goals this season, including a dramatic late winner away to Elche, and he can operate as a central or attacking midfielder.
The Croatian is left-footed, carries a threat from distance and is comfortable receiving the ball in crowded areas.
Jaissle coached him for two seasons at Salzburg, and together they won consecutive Austrian league titles, as well as the Austrian Cup, while also reaching the Champions League knockout rounds.
That existing relationship provides an obvious reason for Newcastle’s interest.
Sucic understands the intensity Jaissle expects and could add more control and creativity to a midfield still adjusting after the summer departures.
Real Sociedad may also consider negotiating below the clause or allowing payments to be spread, having signed him for just £9 million.
For now, this remains a transfer possibility rather than an advanced move. However, Newcastle’s collapse at Leeds showed why another proven midfielder could quickly move up their list of priorities.
