Official lap times for MotoGP’s new 850cc bikes and Pirelli tires have not yet been released. Despite this, private testing reports consistently show Ducati and upcoming MotoGP star Nicolo Bulega leading the timing sheets.
Bulega has been juggling the development of Ducati’s latest machine alongside his World Superbike (WorldSBK) campaign, where he has claimed victory in all but one race this season. He has the chance to secure the 2026 WorldSBK championship at the next round in Cremona, yet his transition to MotoGP is already confirmed, as he will return to VR46—the team where his grand prix career began.
“We’re very pleased he’s coming back home,” said VR46 team manager Pablo Nieto in an interview with MotoGP reporter Jack Appleyard at Misano. “He’s performing excellently in WorldSBK and plays a crucial role as Ducati’s test rider, doing an outstanding job.”
Nieto downplayed the advantage Bulega might have from his extensive testing experience compared to regular MotoGP riders. “This is MotoGP—every rider is a superstar, and they will quickly adapt to the new bikes and tires within a few days,” he explained.
Still, Nieto pointed to the upcoming Monday test at the Red Bull Ring—where all manufacturers will be together on track for the second time—as a key moment to gauge if the new Ducati is genuinely as fast as it seems. “That test after Austria will be very telling to see if we truly have an edge,” Nieto added. “It’s valuable that Bulega is already familiar with the tires and bike development, but right now, the Ducati 850 looks very quick.”
Speaking at Misano, Bulega shared his impressions of the new bike: “I really enjoy the Ducati 850. It’s a great machine combined with the new Pirelli tires, which I’m comfortable with from Superbike racing. I’ve done a couple of good tests, and it’s exciting to get a feel for the bike ahead of next season.”
Ducati, like other MotoGP manufacturers, has yet to announce which riders will participate in the post-race test at the Austrian Grand Prix.
