Israel Adesanya has recently expressed his sympathies for Tom Aspinall.
It has been a week since Aspinall had to relinquish his UFC heavyweight title because of ongoing complications from an eye injury he sustained during his last fight last year. Despite multiple surgeries, the damage has worsened, and the 33-year-old fighter is now focusing on recovery, sparking discussions among fans.
Adesanya, saddened by Aspinall’s situation, weighed in on the struggles the British fighter faces. Due to the fragile condition of his eye, even a strong hit in training could jeopardize his ability to compete. Adesanya shared, “So, his eye is in a position, or in a state, where even if he gets hit hard during training, it can affect his eye, and then that way he’s not going to be able to show up. That sucks, man.”
Prior to the injury, Aspinall was on an impressive rise. Apart from one rare loss—caused by an unusual injury and later avenged—he was dominating his division, defeating top contenders with ease. Reflecting on Aspinall’s journey, Adesanya remarked, “[He’s] a guy who has done it the right way. He came in; he’s not a, you know, like me or Conor or whatever—braggadocious, talking trash, but still deliver. He just came in and worked, showcased why he’s a great heavyweight, and then became a champion after how long? Took the fight on short notice, I believe, with Pavlovich. Then, eventually, now, he should be celebrated as the heavyweight champion; the baddest man on the planet.”
Adesanya concluded, “It sucks. For a guy like Tom, who I feel is a good dude. He’s a great champion. It’s just a sh*t roll of the dice.”
Fan Take: This setback for Aspinall is a sobering reminder of the physical toll the sport can take, highlighting the fragility of even the most dominant fighters. For MMA enthusiasts, it opens up questions about the future of the heavyweight division and the challenges athletes face in balancing health with competition.
