David Silva has decided to come out of retirement to sign with Hong Kong Premier League team Supreme Sha Tin at the age of 40, as reported by Paul McNamara from the South China Morning Post. The former Manchester City star has agreed to a short-term contract with the newly promoted club, over three years after a knee injury forced him to stop playing.
Club owner Jim Wong Chi-chuen mentioned that Silva could make his debut against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18, though if that match is too soon, he might play against BC Rangers on November 7 instead. Supreme began their league campaign with a win against Eastern but then suffered three losses in a row. Recently appointed English coach Tom Ballantyne will guide the team as they adapt to the top tier of football.
Silva hung up his boots in July 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament tear during preseason with Real Sociedad. He had returned to La Liga in 2020 after spending a decade with Manchester City, where he helped La Real win the Copa del Rey and qualify for the Champions League.
During his time at City, Silva made 436 appearances and scored 77 goals. His achievements include winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups, along with providing 93 assists in the English top flight. He netted the first goal in City’s 6-0 FA Cup final win against Watford in 2019, which secured a domestic treble under Pep Guardiola. Silva was later honored with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium for his contributions.
On the international stage, he earned 125 caps for Spain, winning European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012, as well as the World Cup in 2010. He was part of the squad that famously defeated Italy 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final.
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it showcases Silva’s legendary resilience and passion for the game, fueling excitement in the Hong Kong Premier League. His presence will not only elevate the level of competition but also inspire local talent, potentially boosting the sport’s profile in the region.
