2025 NBA Draft Spotlight: Which Star Will Claim the No. 3 Pick – Ace Bailey or VJ Edgecombe?

The 2025 NBA Draft is expected to kick off with the third pick. The top two picks are set in stone: Duke’s Cooper Flag will go first to Dallas, a pick that is non-negotiable, while Rutgers’ Dylan Harper is projected as the second pick for San Antonio, though the Spurs might entertain trades only if the deals align with contracts similar in scale to Giannis Antetokounmpo’s. According to NBC Sports’ latest 2025 NBA mock draft, Rutgers’ standout player Bailey is expected to be picked third by Philadelphia, and Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe is projected at fourth for Charlotte. However, these two selections are not guaranteed.

Bailey’s position at number three remains uncertain primarily because the identity of the third pick is not fixed. Due to fortunate lottery results, the Philadelphia 76ers have the chance to make a decision. As a competitive team managed by Daryl Morey, the 76ers would see drafting Bailey—who could complement young talents like Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain—as a strategic move, alongside veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George focused on winning. If a more attractive trade offer arises, the 76ers might consider it seriously.

Bailey is a player who divides opinions, as noted by ESPN’s Jeremy Woo. He observes that NBA executives remain split on Bailey throughout the season, with concerns about how quickly he can adjust to the NBA and whether he will fulfill his potential. While Bailey has the second-highest ceiling in the draft after Flag, boasting a prototypical modern wing/stretch four build at 6’8″ with solid athleticism and scoring ability (18.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season), there are doubts about his consistency. His reliance on difficult shots, moderate free throw percentage (69.2%), and low foul-drawing ability worry some scouts, who fear he might not evolve into a star but rather a role player.

In contrast, Edgecombe offers a strong two-way game. Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reports that Edgecombe had an impressive interview with the Hornets. Known as the most explosive athlete in the class and an elite defender, he shot 36.4% last season, making him a good fit as a two-guard alongside Lamelo Ball and Brandon Miller. Edgecombe excels in transition and can effectively play off the ball.

If the third pick is traded, teams might prefer Edgecombe’s athleticism, defensive skills, and higher floor over Bailey’s higher upside but riskier profile. Some mock drafts predict Edgecombe at third and Bailey at four for Charlotte. Ultimately, the choice will depend on who holds the third pick at draft time.

In draft picks, potential upside usually carries more weight. General managers often avoid passing on potential future stars to evade criticism from fans and ownership in the coming years. This positions Bailey as the likely third pick, though his spot is not guaranteed, and draft night trades could shake up the top selections.

Fan Take: This draft preview highlights the fine balance teams must strike between potential and proven skill—a tension that makes draft night thrilling for fans. How these young talents develop could shape the future landscape of the NBA, making this upcoming draft crucial for the league’s future stars and team success.
