Carson Hocevar will miss the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway following a suspension imposed by his team, Spire Motorsports, rather than NASCAR itself. Throughout the season, Hocevar has been surrounded by controversy, culminating last weekend at Martinsville where he deliberately brake-checked Austin Cindric several times, causing significant damage to the Penske driver. Hocevar later downplayed the incident, claiming they were “just having fun.” Additionally, during the same race, Hocevar spun out intentionally according to some rivals’ suspicions.
Spire Motorsports chose not to single out any specific incident but cited a larger issue concerning respect and integrity within the team. Beyond the team’s penalty, NASCAR has fined Hocevar $100,000 and deducted 25 championship points from his tally.
Jeff Dickerson, owner of Spire Motorsports, expressed that although they could have left disciplinary actions to NASCAR, the team prioritized principles of respect and professionalism. He acknowledged their appreciation for working with Hocevar but stressed that his behavior at Martinsville did not align with the standards expected from anyone representing their organization. Dickerson affirmed that the team will compete united at Homestead and prepare for the next season’s championship challenge at Daytona with a renewed focus.
Currently sitting 12th in the championship after dropping two spots at Martinsville, Hocevar stands to lose more ground by missing the Homestead race. Justin Haley, a former Spire driver who secured the team’s first Cup win in 2019, will substitute for him in the No. 77 Chevrolet at this weekend’s event.
Hocevar apologized for his behavior saying, “This is an embarrassing day for me,” and admitted he let down the team, sponsors, and fans. He vowed to return in 2027 as a stronger driver and teammate. The Martinsville episode adds to a tumultuous year, where he has clashed with top drivers such as Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney, and faced criticism from NASCAR legends Jeff Burton and Dale Jarrett for his carefree demeanor after the incidents.
Fan Take: Hocevar’s suspension and hefty fine highlight the importance of professionalism and accountability in NASCAR’s top tier. For fans, this serves as a reminder that even talented, up-and-coming drivers must uphold sportsmanship if they want to compete at the highest level and maintain the sport’s integrity.
