Jobe Bellingham, brother of Jude Bellingham, has received his first senior England call-up for the upcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain. However, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has been excluded from the squad after pulling out of last month’s selection.
Jobe has been recognized for his outstanding performance at Borussia Dortmund this season, making him a notable addition to the national team after participating in England’s youth squads from under-16 to under-21 levels. The 21-year-old midfielder was selected over Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, who was part of England’s World Cup team.
According to England coach Thomas Tuchel, Mainoo had a rough period with injuries, missing many matches, whereas Jobe has consistently impressed. “The door is always open for younger players to make their mark,” Tuchel added.
If both Bellinghams take the field together, they could become the first siblings to play for England together since Gary and Phil Neville in the late 90s and early 2000s. Jobe is following in Jude’s footsteps, having started at Birmingham City before moving to Dortmund, where Jude also made an impact. Tuchel acknowledged Jobe’s great form with Dortmund, stating he’s become a key player with an excellent start to the season.
While Jobe’s international career is beginning, Cole Palmer’s future is uncertain following his omission this time. After missing out on the World Cup squad this past summer and later withdrawing from last month’s set of internationals due to discomfort, Tuchel indicated that injuries had led to Palmer being overlooked again. “It’s not personal,” Tuchel stressed, highlighting that the players currently in camp capitalized on their opportunity.
Other notable omissions included Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Manchester City’s Phil Foden, while Fulham’s Josh King received his first call-up. England will face Croatia at Wembley on November 12 and Spain in Madrid on November 15.
