Rob Dolan from Saratoga Springs, New York, secured first place in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge by confidently wagering on an exacta involving Sovereignty and The Puma in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). With a starting bankroll of $140,694 and an additional $485,100 in prize money, Dolan ended the weekend with total earnings of $625,794.
The 18th annual Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, the largest live-money tournament in Thoroughbred racing, took place on October 30-31 and attracted a record 693 participants—a 7.7% increase from 2025. Competitors engaged in betting across the two-day 43rd Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.
“It’s both thrilling and unexpected,” said Dolan, aged 45, who was competing in the BCBC for only the second time. “Many of my favorites didn’t win or even place, so building up such a big bankroll felt almost unbelievable.”
Though he spent years wagering at Saratoga Race Course’s picnic area, Dolan only started taking part in tournament play in 2025 after seeing an interview with Matt Miller, the 2021 BCBC champion and author, who finished third this year. Entering the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic ranked mid-pack, Dolan risked $4,495 on a cold exacta between the 9-5 second favorite Sovereignty and the underdog 17-1 The Puma, and additionally placed $10,541 to win on The Puma.
“Sovereignty was the probable winner, but The Puma offered great value,” Dolan explained. “It was a strategy to back my belief—if Sovereignty performed as expected, I still stood a chance to win.”
Dolan accumulated 140,694 points and, combined with his first-place prize of $485,100, totaled $625,794 in winnings. Clay Sanders from Memphis, Tennessee, came in second with 130,847 points and total earnings of $454,247, while Matt Miller of Northbrook, Illinois finished third with $298,451.
The participants contributed $9,474,480 in total betting volume. At Keeneland, tournament wagers accounted for 26.9% of the on-site handle. Each competitor in the 2026 BCBC began with a $2,500 buy-in plus a $7,500 betting bankroll, forming a record $1,732,500 prize pool. Players placed real bets, including win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, and daily double, over 22 races across two days and kept all resulting winnings.
Competitors joined from Keeneland, the official satellite location at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, as well as online through TVG.com—the Breeders’ Cup’s wagering partner—and other platforms like Keeneland Select, Xpressbet.com, Twinspires.com, NYRABets.com, 4NJBets.com, and HPIbet.com.
