Gian Piero Gasperini is confident that Roma is a serious contender for the Serie A title after their impressive 3-0 victory over Sassuolo.
Following a disappointing loss to Manchester United, Roma made a strong comeback at Stadio Olimpico on Saturday against Sassuolo.
Goals from Mario Hermoso and Rodrigo Mora, along with an own goal by Sebastian Walukiewicz, secured the win for Roma.
Roma generated 3.73 expected goals in a commanding display, extending their unbeaten home league streak to 18 games—their longest under a single manager since Luciano Spalletti’s 22-game run from January 2016 to February 2017 (with 19 wins and 3 draws).
They also became just the fourth team in 65 years to score over 30 goals in the first 11 Serie A matches of a season, joining Juventus (33), Napoli (32), and Lazio (31) from the 2017-18 season. Roma has netted 31 goals so far this season.
With this victory, Roma climbed to second place temporarily as Inter was set to play on Sunday, while Lazio remained at the top.

Gasperini now considers his team as part of the title race.
“It’s been an incredible series of matches; our only losses came against Real Madrid and Manchester United. We’ve also managed a series of wins and draws against Como and Napoli,” Gasperini remarked.
“Those two defeats were tough, especially since we were leading, but they occurred against top opponents after solid performances from our side.”
“We’ve undoubtedly improved our attacking play this season, allowing us to score in various ways and through different players. Even in defeat, we’ve managed to find the net multiple times.”
“This game isn’t merely a reaction to past defeats; it’s a testament to the positive path this team is on. It’s exciting to play this season. We shouldn’t get carried away with excitement, but there’s nothing wrong with dreaming about the possibilities ahead. I can’t predict what we might achieve.”
“Inter are currently in the best position to win, but all of us, including Roma, have a chance in this competitive landscape.”
Mora had previously hit the crossbar before Hermoso scored in the 27th minute, finishing after initially attempting to assist Donyell Malen. Walukiewicz inadvertently redirected Malen’s shot into his own net, and Roma secured their third goal in the second half when Mora found the bottom corner.
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it indicates a tightly contested Serie A season, showcasing Roma’s resurgence and the increasing competitiveness among top teams. Such dynamics not only boost fan engagement but also heighten the excitement around the league, making every match increasingly crucial for title aspirations.
