Ohio Senators Propose Using Unclaimed Funds, Including Payments to Ex-Crebrand QB, to Finance New Browns Stadium

The plan to finance the new Cleveland Browns stadium has sparked debate, as Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and other state lawmakers propose using funds that won’t be directly charged to the public to support the $2.4 billion development. Cleveland.com reported that some well-known local figures, including former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, are among those who have unclaimed funds involved in the financing. The Ohio Senate suggests allocating money from the state’s $4.8 billion unclaimed property fund toward the stadium in Brook Park, roughly 20 minutes from Cleveland. Under the proposal, $1.7 billion would go into a new sports facility fund—$600 million of which would help pay for the Browns’ stadium, while the remaining $1.1 billion would finance other stadium projects, according to Senator Jerry Cirino.

Tax revenue generated by the stadium project is expected to repay the unclaimed property fund, with Browns owner Dee Haslam agreeing to deposit up to $100 million in escrow to cover any shortfall in tax revenue. However, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne opposes the plan and urges Ohio residents to claim their unclaimed funds before they are allocated for stadium funding. Alongside Mayfield, other notable residents with unclaimed money include former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, Cleveland Guardians owner Paul Dolan, Cleveland Cavaliers CEO Nic Barlage, and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb. Claiming the funds requires submitting various forms of identification and residency proof.

Opponents like Ronayne argue the Browns should stay downtown and suggest that $350 million from the state could be used to renovate the existing Lakefront Stadium. Critics also believe unclaimed funds should prioritize local needs such as schools and food programs over stadium financing.
