NHL Coaching Shuffle 2025: Spotlight on Pete De Bore After Yet Another Playoff Run

The NHL coaching carousel saw renewed activity as the Dallas Stars decided to part ways with head coach Pete DeBoer following their third consecutive loss in the Western Conference Finals to the Edmonton Oilers. Despite DeBoer’s numerous accomplishments behind the bench, he was unable to lead the Stars past the final hurdles in consecutive years. General manager Jim Nill expressed that it is time for a fresh voice in the locker room to help advance the team’s ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup, while also thanking DeBoer for his contributions over the past three seasons.

DeBoer finishes his tenure in Dallas with a record of 149-68-29, and the Stars now begin searching for a new head coach after most top candidates have already been hired elsewhere during the offseason. The Boston Bruins recently filled their coaching vacancy by hiring Marco Sturm, who previously coached the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, boasting a 119-80-11-6 record and three playoff appearances. Other notable coaching changes include the Pittsburgh Penguins hiring former New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse, Seattle Kraken bringing in former New York Islanders coach Lane Lambert, the Vancouver Canucks promoting assistant Adam Foote, and Rick Tocchet returning to coach the Philadelphia Flyers.

With the Bruins’ recent hire, all NHL coaching vacancies have now been filled.

Fan Take: This coaching shuffle highlights the high stakes and pressure in the NHL, showing that even successful coaches like Pete DeBoer can be let go if the ultimate prize remains out of reach. These changes could bring exciting new strategies and energy to teams, potentially shifting the competitive landscape of the league in the coming seasons.
