Two-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Jaire Alexander Set for Reported Release

The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with cornerback Jayer Alexander, who is set to be released on Tuesday as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Once a two-time Pro Bowler, Alexander’s career has been significantly hampered by injuries in recent years. In 2023, back and shoulder injuries restricted him to just seven games, and knee problems limited him to only seven games in 2024.

Alexander was once one of the league’s top cornerbacks. After a strong rookie season in 2018, he started all 16 games in his second year. He earned his initial Pro Bowl nod and was named to the second-team All-Pro in 2020. Despite a shoulder injury that kept him to just four games in 2021, he bounced back in 2022 by playing all 16 games and receiving both Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors.

In 2022, Alexander signed a four-year, $84 million extension, with an expected salary of over $16 million in 2025. However, it appears Alexander declined the terms of the deal, which likely contributed to his release. Although he has struggled with injuries, Alexander’s multiple Pro Bowl appearances in seasons where he played more than ten games make him an attractive free agent. Given his health concerns, he may need to accept a short-term contract but could earn a more lucrative deal if he returns to form.

Fan Take: This move is significant for NFL fans as it underscores the harsh reality of how injuries can derail even the most talented athletes’ careers. For the sport, it highlights the constant balancing act teams face between investing in proven talent and managing the risks of player health issues.
