Ty Gibbs Emphasizes “Winning Over Third” After Impressive Performance in Michigan

Ty Gibbs recently celebrated his 100th start in the NASCAR Cup Series and continues to perform strongly at this elite level. Though he secured a third-place finish in Michigan, his 27th position in the standings limits his playoff prospects, making the top-five result less impactful. Gibbs expressed disappointment, especially since fuel strategy prevented him from pushing for the win. He watched as his teammate Denny Hamlin managed to overtake him and take the victory despite the challenges.

Gibbs stated, “I wish we had it; that wasn’t an option for fuel strategy from where we were. It’s very disappointing.” He acknowledged the team’s speed and capability but also recognized the frustration that comes with such close misses. Despite managing to stretch his fuel, Gibbs wondered how much more he could have done, especially with William Byron being the only driver who hadn’t yet finished the race. Concluding, he said, “Winning is more important than third. It’s good to finish and a strong comeback after a tough start. We’re happy to be back and moving forward.”

The No. 54 team has only secured 30 laps this year, while teammates Hamlin and Christopher Bell have each claimed three wins. Though Gibbs was frustrated by the lost chance, the strong performance marks progress as NASCAR prepares for the upcoming race in Mexico City.
