Chelsea are reportedly preparing to “attack” the situation of Benfica central defender Thomas Araujo this summer, as they also look to Liverpool.
A report from Portugal’s Outlet A Bola says that Chelsea, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain could become teams watching in the race to sign Araujo, who has a release clause of 80 million euros on the Benfica deal.
The report adds that Benfica doesn’t want to sell Araujo, but it appears that some kind of approach is expected from Chelsea.
Fabrizio Romano previously said Catch off side About Chelsea’s interest in Portugal International.
Chelsea have done well in the past to sign Enzo Fernandez of Benfica. Araujo looks like another player ready to take that step up to a higher level.
The relocation status of Thomas Araujo explained
Mullet suggests that Chelsea should be able to afford Araujo’s attractive offers, but Liverpool should still watch after missing out on Real Madrid’s joining Dean Huyssen.
Araujo has established himself as a key player since breaking into Benfica’s first team and looks like a great alternative to someone like Fuizen.
The 23-year-old is still relatively inexperienced, but that shouldn’t stop Chelsea. Chelsea have recently done well with their philosophy of signing the best and most promising talents around the world.
Do Chelsea and Liverpool need Araujo?
Araujo appears to be an upgrade for unconvincing performers such as Wesley Fofana, who is prone to injury on the side of Enzo Maresca.
Liverpool, on the other hand, probably doesn’t need Araujo as much as they already have Virgil van Dik and Ibrahima Conate.
However, there is always room for more squad depth, so Araujo could be a useful option to spin alongside Vandic and Conate over a long season.
Liverpool will also be a more attractive project as they will likely go from strength to strength after winning the Premier League title in 2024/25.
