The Madison Keys are based on Australia’s open victory. The Americans got off to an encouragemental start at the 2025 French Open on Monday, defeating Dahlia Saville in the first round.

This victory was expected by Key, who participated in the event as the seventh-placed female player. Keys won the rankings after beating both Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, first and second female players, respectively, and the Australian Open.

Key blew a breeze during Monday’s match, winning in two sets (6-2, 6-1).

The victory makes Keys the highest-ranked American woman and breaks out of her first round so far. Emma Navarro ranked ninth in France’s 2025 opening, but suffered shocking upset against Spain’s Jessica Bouza Maneiro in the first round on Monday.

The two American women were ranked higher than the key. The second Cocogoff and third Jessica Pegra will not be in court until Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Key is a veteran compared to some of the other highly ranked players at the 2025 French Open. She became professional as a 14-year-old, and there is a debate that she is playing her best tennis now. Keys’ victory at the 2025 Australia Open marked her first Grand Slam victory. She almost won the US Open in 2017 and fell to US Sloan Stephens in the final.

Keys aims to capitalize on Australia’s open victory in a deep run at the French Open. With the victory, she will face Katie Boulter in the second round on Wednesday.
