LONDON – Wimbledon two-time champion Petra Kvitova is set to retire in a few months, the Czech player said Thursday.

The announcement on social media came the day after Kvitova was given a wild card to Wimbledon.

“I am excited and look forward to immersing myself in the beauty of playing the championship, Wimbledon again.

“And I’m still not entirely sure what the US hard court swing looks like, but I’m planning on finishing my active playing career at New York’s US Open later this summer.”

Kvitova, 35, reached the second-place career-high ranking and supported the Czech Republic in six Fed Cup trophies, now known as the Billie Jean King Cup.

Kvitova last played at Wimbledon in 2023 and became a mother for the first time when her son was born in last year’s tournament.

Kvitova returned to the WTA tour held in Austin, Texas in February after 17 months away from the courthouse, and is currently ranked 572nd.

Wimbledon will begin on June 30th.
