The Australian Open semi-finals have been set for 2025. Wednesday’s match confirmed their opponents, and one remaining American in the male single: 22 years old Ben Shelton.

No. 21 seed Shelton won a tough quarterfinal against unseeded Cinderella Lorenzo Sonegomake him 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4). Sonego and Shelton matched well as competitors, and all sets were heated up until the final tiebreak. And if anyone wondered that Sonego, 29, currently ranked 55th in the world, has reached the first Grand Slam quarterfinals of his career, all they had to do was see. Sonego had scored extraordinary points throughout the tournament.

But on Wednesday, such a point wasn’t enough for Sonego to pass Shelton. Shelton has had the talent to slowly boil down on tours for the past few years, but now he’s boiling and perhaps even getting his muscles to get closer to the top of the ATP rankings.

Jannik SinnerNo. 1 seed and defending Australian open champions spent a simple time against No. 8 seed Alex do Minauru. The crowd was firmly on the side of De Minauru as Australia’s last Australian stood in both male and female singles, but the sinner still won 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in two hours.

Now, Shelton must face the number one in the world, appearing in his second career Grand Slam semi-finals and Australia’s first open semi-finals. Unfortunately, history is not on his side. Thinner played 14 Americans in the Grand Slam tournament and defeated all of them. The odds are piled up against him, but Shelton is about to win in America and reach his first Grand Slam final.

Then, of course, in the final, Shelton had to play either Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev, who will face off in the other semi-finals on Friday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the 12th seeded Madison Keys progressed to the semi-finals, where she faces second seed Iga Sweet. In the other semi-finals, no. Aryna Sabalenka from 1 will take on the 11th Pola Badosa.
