There was a period when the Los Angeles Lakers seriously contemplated trading Kobe Bryant. Kobe, renowned as one of the greatest basketball players ever, secured five NBA championship titles throughout his 20-year career. A loyal Laker for his entire career, Kobe even requested a trade in 2007, showing signs of frustration with the franchise. At that time, despite being a three-time NBA champion, Kobe wasn’t yet the league’s top star. The Lakers explored trade possibilities and interestingly reached out to the Cleveland Cavaliers about acquiring a 22-year-old LeBron James. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst in 2016, the Lakers inquired whether the Cavaliers would consider trading LeBron for Kobe, which surprised even Cleveland’s management. However, LeBron was off-limits, and Kobe himself opposed being traded to Cleveland, favoring other teams instead. Ultimately, the trade never materialized, and Kobe stayed with the Lakers, achieving an MVP season in 2007-08 and leading his team to the NBA Finals, though they lost to the Boston Celtics. LeBron eventually joined the Lakers in 2018, marking the start of a new chapter for the franchise.

Fan Take: This intriguing near-trade reveals how dramatically NBA history could have shifted if Kobe and LeBron swapped places earlier. For basketball fans, it’s a fascinating “what if” scenario that highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport and how a single decision can shape legacies and franchises.
