Three-stage plan to improve the F1 Monaco Grand Prix Circuit

GPDA director Alex Weltz has come up with a three-stage plan to revamp the Monaco Street Circuit and make Formula 1’s most iconic race more interesting for fans.

After the new two-pit stop rule introduced in 2025 failed to create new overtaking opportunities, former Formula 1 driver and 24-hour winner Wurz proposed three major changes to Monte Carlo’s tight, twisted street circuit.

The Austrian, who is also working on Saudi Arabia’s new Qiddiya racetrack, said these tweaks aim to improve traceability while considering “urban city constraints.”

New Shikane

As part of the proposal, Wurz proposed moving further along Nouvelle Chicane.

Wurz described the current Nouvelle Chicane as a “place of close,” and “from experience watching races and talking to fellow drivers, moving Chicane later should be possible with the constraints the city has physically,” he said.

“That means defense on this corner can be done very easily with kinks and bumps, but it’s even more difficult.”
“You can prepare to pass, and if you’re running Chicane later, you’ll have a higher chance of running it.”
Of course, this will require a considerable amount of civil engineering effort, but Wurz believes that more buildings to the port are technically feasible.

Additionally, he notes the impact on TABAC and hopes the driver will pull away from entering that corner.

Lascas

Wurz wants to recreate the famous Rascasse Corner by moving the vertex 2-3 meters and expanding the track.

He said there is a parking entrance outside the corner, but “we can squeeze everything we have and as more of this apex comes up, the entry line will definitely change.”

He added:

“If you’re defending, you’ll come out much slower, so you’ll make a train behind you and the pressure on all the drivers simply increases.”

Unlike the proposed changes at Nouvelle Chicane, Wurz believes that changing Rascasse should be much easier for organizers.

hairpin

Wurz proposes expanding the circuit up to 2.4 meters upon entry to the famous hairpin, increasing the chances of drivers charging.

He also suggested removing the curb at the corner exit and extending the asphalt to the right to the exterior wall.

“The true ideal race line doesn’t change from what it is,” he explained. The letters in the corners are not changed.

“But it allows for overtaking dive bombs. If it’s failing, you still have what you’re gaining here (at the corner exit) with 2.5 meters of extra asphalt.

“Again, that just leads to a little more defensiveness, so this corner will begin to overtake the new Chicane.
