The Brooklyn Nets, once expected to pursue a blockbuster trade for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, appear to be shifting their strategy based on recent trade rumors. Despite playing in the NBA’s largest media market and boasting a star-studded core of Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Kevin Durant, the team failed to meet expectations, reminiscent of past rosters featuring stars like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Originally, the Nets planned for a less favorable lottery outcome and anticipated picking eighth overall, but they hoped to secure a higher selection in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, due to unexpected lottery results, the Nets now seem poised to change course. With four first-round picks in 2025 (8th, 19th, 26th, and 27th), they are considering trading some of their later picks to acquire additional lottery selections.

Industry insiders believe the Nets could obtain a second lottery pick by packaging end-of-first-round picks and future draft assets, according to a report by the New York Post’s Brian Lewis. Trading away Cameron Johnson, one of their better young players, would likely end any trade pursuit for Antetokounmpo and signal a focus on building around young talents like Nick Claxton and Cam Thomas, supplemented by high draft picks in 2025.

As true rebuilding teams like the Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards seek youthful prospects rather than proven shooters, they may not align well with Brooklyn’s plans. The Philadelphia 76ers could be a logical partner for acquiring shooting talent like Johnson, though the cost of a high pick might be prohibitive. More realistic trade partners for moving up in the draft include the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, and Atlanta Hawks, all of whom have established cores or playoff experience.

While Brooklyn likely cannot snag the Spurs’ second overall pick, they might be able to maneuver for the 14th pick, previously owed from the Hawks. Such moves would keep the team near the bottom of the standings in the next season but could pave the way for organic growth and sustainable long-term success.
