The Chicago Cubs have recently been dealt a significant blow as they announced that Miguel Amaya will be sidelined for up to six weeks due to a serious injury.

Miguel Amaya, who has been a key part of the Cubs’ strong start to the 2025 season, suffered a left-side injury during a game against the Cincinnati Reds. Despite his injury, the Cubs managed to win the series against the Reds with a solid performance overall. The 26-year-old catcher has been crucial to the team’s success, helping them secure a 34-21 record. Initially placed on the 10-day injured list, further MRI results have extended his expected recovery time to four to six weeks.

Amaya, a Panama-born player signed by the Cubs in 2015 and added to their MLB roster in 2023, has shown continuous improvement. Despite his impressive contributions, including a slash line of .280/3.13/.509 with notable doubles and home runs, he remains one of the lowest-paid players on the team, unlike some of his higher-paid teammates such as Dansby Swanson.

In light of Amaya’s injury, the Cubs have explored potential replacements. While some fans suggested promoting young talent Moises Ballesteros, Cubs manager Craig Counsel emphasized not wanting to burden the 21-year-old, citing the challenges of the catcher position and the need for experience. Instead, the team has decided to bring up Reese McGuire, who joined them via a minor league deal earlier this year and debuted on May 25th. With over 300 MLB appearances, McGuire’s addition is seen as a strategic move to maintain team performance without putting undue pressure on Ballesteros, with Cubs president Jed Hoyer expressing confidence in Ballesteros’ future development.
