The WNBA announced on Tuesday that its investigation found no evidence to support claims of “racist fan behavior” during a recent game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever held in Indianapolis earlier this month. This update comes nine days after the league began looking into accusations of hateful comments aimed at Chicago Sky player Angel Reese during the May 17, 2025 match.

In a statement, the WNBA said, “We investigated reports of racist fan behavior near the court during the Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever game. Based on all information gathered, including input from fans, teams, arena staff, and thorough audio and video reviews, we could not verify these allegations.” The league reiterated its commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive atmosphere for all and emphasized it will strengthen enforcement of the fan code of conduct.

Chicago Sky’s CEO and President, Adam Fox, expressed gratitude toward the WNBA and Indiana Fever for addressing the issue promptly and seriously. He highlighted that the investigation reflects the league’s firm stance against hate at every game and event and its ongoing support of such measures.

Similarly, the Indiana Fever praised the WNBA’s swift and comprehensive response. Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, stated their dedication to providing an excellent basketball environment at Gainbridge Field House, where hate speech has no place. He also voiced excitement for the upcoming basketball season in Indiana, known for its passionate fans.

Both Angel Reese and Indiana Fever star Kate Linklark supported the investigation. Reese shared that she feels well-supported by the WNBA and her organization, expressing appreciation for the love and backing she has received amid recent challenges. Linklark added that the game—and society as a whole—should have no tolerance for hate, commending the league and Fever organization for their leadership on this matter.

The rivalry between Reese and Linklark, which began in college during the 2023 national championships and continued with a televised rematch in 2024, often stirs strong feelings among fans. Their competitive clashes in the WNBA are known for intense moments, with fanbases frequently showing animosity toward the opposing player.

This report was contributed by CNN journalists Ben Morse, Matias Grez, and Thomas Schlachter.

Fan Take: This investigation’s outcome is important for WNBA fans as it highlights the league’s dedication to maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for players and fans alike. Upholding these values not only protects athletes like Angel Reese but also strengthens the integrity and appeal of women’s basketball.
