Tom Watson’s late goal against Sheffield United secured Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after a long absence.

During Saturday’s playoff match at Wembley, Sunderland spent much of the game trailing Sheffield’s Tyree Campbell, who scored in the 25th minute. However, Eliezer Mayenda equalized in the 76th minute, paving the way for Watson, a substitute and academy graduate, to clinch the win.

With just five minutes of stoppage time remaining, Watson expertly placed the ball in the net, igniting jubilation throughout the stadium. This victory marks Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after eight years, having fallen to the third-tier League One in 2018.

Sunderland controlled 64.20% of possession in the first half, with one of their two shots hitting the post. By the end of the match, they maintained 57% possession with three out of nine shots on target, while Sheffield managed seven shots, four of which were on goal.

Despite winning only one of their last eight matches and suffering six consecutive defeats leading up to the EFL Championship playoffs, Sunderland finished the season in fourth place, trailing Sheffield United by 14 points. Now, they’ll join Leeds United and Burnley in the Premier League, where they can expect around $260 million in revenue from games, broadcasting, and sponsorships for the 2025-26 season.

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League is significant for soccer fans, as it revives a storied club with a rich history in English football. This win not only boosts the excitement of the league but also highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport, reminding fans that fortunes can change dramatically in a single season.
