Deny Hamlin’s 600 Cola Victory Marred by Refueling Mishap Denial

During the majority of the Coca-Cola 600 race, William Byron remained a prominent leader on the track, closely followed by Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing, who led 53 laps behind Byron. However, by the race’s end, Hamlin finished in 16th place and was the last driver to complete a lap on the lead lap.

Hamlin, the 2022 Cola 600 winner, was positioned second during the final sequence of green flag pit stops. Unfortunately, after rejoining the race, he discovered he didn’t have enough fuel to finish. A fuel hose wasn’t properly attached during a pit stop, causing fuel to spill on the ground. Trying to stay on track without caution, Hamlin had to pit again with 12 laps left, losing his third-place position as the eventual winner, Ross Chastain, passed him.

Following the race, Hamlin expressed few words but affirmed his professionalism and commitment to the Toyota team despite the pit road error. This mistake is part of a recurring issue for Hamlin, who has faced similar pit road problems that affected his 2024 playoff chances.

Fan Take: This outcome serves as a tough reminder of how critical pit crew precision is in NASCAR, directly impacting the race results even for top drivers like Hamlin. For fans, it underscores the intense strategic elements and challenges behind the scenes, adding depth to the thrill of the sport.
