Steelers Gear Up for High-Stakes Showdown with Aaron Rodgers as Training Camp Nears

Free agency has come and gone, and the draft is over. Currently, the Steelers are in the middle of organizing their team activities. Surely, Aaron Rodgers won’t miss the entire offseason, only showing up at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, right?

It seems this has been an ongoing topic of discussion, particularly around the time just before the NFL Draft in April. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan have both indicated that the quarterback situation doesn’t need to be finalized until late July.

“We’ll go into camp with four quarterbacks,” Khan said on April 23. “Right now, we have two on the roster, and all options are being considered to fill the remaining spots.”

Tomlin also mentioned at that same press conference that training camp marks the point when the quarterback group needs to come together.

Rodgers appears to be holding off on signing during the Steelers’ organized team activities, with a full-team mini-camp scheduled for June 10. It likely wasn’t coincidental that both Khan and Tomlin referenced training camp as the deadline for the quarterback decisions. This might have been their plan all along. Rodgers met with the Steelers back in late March to discuss his offseason plans.

Looking back, it seems if Rodgers was going to sign and attend the June minicamp, that would have been clear by now. Both Tomlin and Khan seem to have used training camp as a kind of official cutoff timeline, giving Rodgers flexibility on when exactly he would arrive with the team.

That doesn’t rule out Rodgers signing soon, but it does mean he will likely miss the crucial offseason chemistry-building days. What’s certain is that Pittsburgh is giving Rodgers space on his timetable.

Taking this stance in June may upset some Steelers fans and draw criticism from voices within the franchise, like Terry Bradshaw and Ryan Clark. It also challenges speculation that Rodgers is delaying signing because the Minnesota Vikings are considering their quarterback plans for 2025, including JJ McCarthy. If this sounds speculative, that’s because it is—rumors fly when Rodgers’ playing future remains unclear.

Ironically, if Rodgers ends up skipping everything until training camp, his past words about the importance of early team activities will come back to haunt him. When he joined the New York Jets in 2023, he emphasized the value of attending organized team activities to build chemistry and communicate with new teammates. This message was still available on the Jets website from a May 23, 2023 press conference, where Rodgers appeared relaxed and cheerful.

When asked why it mattered to participate in OTAs with the Jets, Rodgers explained it helped develop early rapport through codewords and adjustments to how the team played.

Two years later, Rodgers seems to be taking time off to handle personal matters, and it’s uncertain if he will return before training camp. Given how seriously he once took offseason chemistry, missing the mini-camp sends a strong signal about his current approach.

As the NFL evolves, players delaying signings isn’t new—Brett Favre famously kept the Packers waiting through parts of two offseasons before signing with the Vikings in 2009. The Steelers face a similar challenge waiting for Rodgers to commit before getting on the field. Both Tomlin and Khan have already opened the door to waiting until late July.

The situation revolves around Rodgers’ timeline, and Pittsburgh must be patient, echoing Steelers owner Art Rooney II’s words that they need “a little longer” to figure things out—possibly even longer than expected.

Fan Take: This situation matters to NFL fans because Aaron Rodgers is still one of the biggest stars in the league, and his signing timeline can shape the Steelers’ season and quarterback landscape. How Rodgers handles this offseason could set a new precedent for player-team negotiations and the importance of early chemistry in a league that’s increasingly valuing player autonomy.
