NBA Veteran Suggests Minnesota Timberwolves Could Benefit from Coaching Shake-Up Similar to Denver Nuggets

A 15-year NBA veteran believes the Minnesota Timberwolves should consider changing their locker room leadership. After coaching the Denver Nuggets for 10 seasons and guiding them to their first NBA Championship in 2023, Michael Malone was unexpectedly fired just days before the playoffs, a move that sparked criticism. David Adelman has since taken over Malone’s role permanently following Malone’s second playoff departure in 2025. While the long-term impact on the Nuggets remains uncertain, Alden Polinis hopes the Timberwolves will take a similar approach.

Chris Finch has led the Timberwolves for five seasons, taking them to back-to-back Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025. However, Polinis argues this success might be a reason to move on from Finch, citing the Nuggets’ example. He points out that the Nuggets, still learning, benefited from having veterans like Malone before deciding on a coaching change after a dip in performance. Polinis believes the Timberwolves, despite their achievements, need a change in coaching to push them beyond their current limits.

Anthony Edwards remains the central star for Minnesota and shows no indication of wanting to leave, but his postseason frustrations are evident. Polinis suggests it might be time for a fresh coaching voice in Minnesota to inspire new energy and progress. He notes that Finch’s candidness with Edwards after slow performances might influence the decision to move on from the current coach.

Fan Take: This potential coaching shakeup in Minnesota highlights how critical leadership is to sustaining success and pushing teams past playoff hurdles. For basketball fans, it signals an evolving strategy in the NBA where fresh voices and energy are often needed to transform promising teams into champions.
