During the 2025 All-Star Game, the NBA introduced a new format. Four teams have been selected by analysts from within TNT’s NBA. They competed in a mini tournament.

One of the biggest reasons why the NBA is changing its All-Star Game Format is the tournaments of four NHL countries. Instead of the traditional All-Star game, the NHL competed in Olympic-style hockey tournaments in the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland. The four-country tournament audiences were soaring and well received by fans all over the world. So Commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA are following a similar path to the 2026 All-Star Game.

Silver announced Wednesday that the 2026 All-Star Game will feature a USA vs World format. He noted that some of their new media deals are watching the All-Star Game back at NBC. The Winter Olympics may be held at the same time. Adam Silver felt that this was the perfect time to showcase the US vs. world format. The longtime commissioner said the league is not sure what the overall layout will be.

Their biggest problem is that 70% of the league are Americans. It leaves only 30% of the league’s talent on the world roster. They hope that the All-Star Game will be more competitive. Non-American players like Giannia Antetokounmpo and Victor Wembanyama have spoken out about their desire for USA vs. world format. They will get their wishes in 2026.
